Singapore Government Plans for Improving Quality and Productivity of Foreign Workforce

The Ministry of Manpower, Government of Singapore has announced a slew of steps to improve productivity and quality of work of its foreign workers. The announcement has come from Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam in his budget statement for 2014.

Steps to be taken include: extending the period of employment for construction, marine and process industry workers, market based skilled recognition framework for construction sector, higher levy for R2 construction Work Pass Permit holders and taking stock of restructuring.

However, the ministry has announced that the present scheme of Dependency Ratio will continue as before. The press release also states that with effect from August, Basic Skilled (R2) Construction work pass holders can upgrade to R1 status on conditions.
